Finding Purpose

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to minister at a "Power of Purpose" event in Toronto, Canada. This event stood out in my mind for a couple of reasons. First of all, it was a weekend long community outreach event. Next it was a mix of competitive sporting activities and traditional services. There is something fascinating about seeing people in a competitive environment where they are determined, strong, and fearless. However, the same people easily become timid, vulnerable and uneasy in other meaningful settings.

Why is it so hard to keep that determination and strength when it counts the most?

It is a challenge to discuss the importance of "keeping your eye on the prize" and staying focused on a purpose that you can't see. It's difficult to explain to a 14-year-old who has no friends and is struggling in school and at home, that God has a designed purpose for him. On the other hand it's extremely easy to tell a 14-year-old that he needs to beat this guy and score. Although beating the other team requires work and can present a challenge, it's a worthwhile risk because the result is evident.

There is power in knowing you have a purpose.

As I am now preparing mentally to return to training camp with the Bills, I am prompted to think about Christians and life, particularly young Christians similar to the ones I was with in Toronto. I am excited about next season, but it's difficult to get excited about training camp. Camp is hard work: long days, restless breaks and sore nights. On the other hand, it's the beginning of another exciting season in the NFL. I get an unexplainable dose of determination during camp because I have a purpose within my grasp; I want to play and I want to win.

If only we could see this in our walk with Christ. A lot of times we go through life giving our all to meaningless tasks because as people we need to feel purposeful. The problem with this is if we don't know our God given purpose we get tired and weary. In order to keep going in what God has called us to, we need His Power.

Jeremiah 29:11 says,

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Trust that God does have a plan and purpose for you and do not give your all for a quick win. Be steadfast and immovable. May you find the power you need to fulfill your purpose in Him.
